RICHES is a collection of both haiku and senryu. The poems adhere to the ancient Japanese tradition of seventeen syllables rather than to their less-rigidly structured Americanized cousins. This collection is a lively combination based on the author's keen perceptions of nature, as well as his wry observations of how humans position themselves in this world. This is done with heavy doses of satire and irony in concert with the candor of the author's world view. Every poem is meant to stand alone and not to be linked to another. They are designed to provoke thought by leaving the reader with a visual snapshot. The reader is left to make the final poetic judgment of each poem. These airy and graceful poems are free of poetic trickery. This book explores complex implications of human nature, while inciting the reader to experience life in the moment, actively rather than passively.

I have had a lifelong love of all kinds of poetry but my favorite’s poetic forms are the short Japanese Haiku and Senryu poems. This 94 page soft cover volume (Riches: Haiku and Senryu by Richard Piccilito) has more than 300 of those short poems. Haiku and Senryu poems consist of three lines of 5-7-5 syllables (total of 17 syllables). The only real difference between a pure Japanese haiku poem and a senryu poem is that most haiku poems will have some seasonal (spring, summer, fall and winter) word, but senryu can deal with many other topics and can even be humorous. In fact many western versions of haiku are probably actually a senryu poem.It is important to understand that the seventeen syllable rule is somewhat flexible because the Japanese language count certain sounds as a syllable, which makes some interpretations of a poem different when written in English.
In any case, I found many of these haiku and senryu poems in this collection very thoughtful and meaningful. There are also several illustrations in this text. The following are just two of the many poems I loved in this collection.
Not even locksmiths
Can open the heart that hides
Her secret feelings
November reminds
The moon is a stark mistress
Yet I adore her
If you like haiku and senryu poems you should check out this volume.
